Commercial water market deregulation – what does it mean for your business?

Commercial water market deregulation – what does it mean for your business?

At the beginning of April 2017, the UK Government deregulated England’s commercial water market. This means that, for the first time, businesses can choose their suppliers for both water and waste water services, no matter where in England or Scotland your business is based.

Scotland was the first country in the world to deregulate its water market, which happened in 2008. It has been very successful at raising standards and lowering prices, with Scottish businesses now enjoying savings on their water bills.

The decision to deregulate the commercial water market was made primarily to improve the quality of the service. Previously, water companies had the monopoly in whichever area they served, and no matter what standard of service they offered. The government hopes that, by giving commercial customers a choice through deregulation, water companies will make an effort to improve both rates and standards.

SavingSmart is pleased to announce that, in line with the new government policy, we can offer discounts on your water bills. While the savings are not as significant as those we often identify on energy bills, the higher your water usage, the greater the saving – money you could be putting to good use in another area of your business.

We can also offer you a more streamlined service than before. If your business operates across sites nationwide, you can now use one water supplier for all your sites. This means that you only receive one water bill for the whole of your commercial water supply, increasing the efficiency of your payments. You’ll also avoid paying different prices in different parts of England, making budgeting easier.
